Description: Snuff Box Cats Reverse Painted with Agate Stopper includes box. EUC. Unsigned. Triangular. Measures approx. 3 5/8" tall 2 1/4" wide. Probably made in China.
Condition: Excellent preowned condition. There are several tiny flea bites around the top shoulder of the bottle. The Birds Eye view of the top shows that they are not significant (pic 5). Otherwise, in wonderful condition. Uncommon triangular shaped bottle.
Snuff bottles were used during the Qing Dynasty to contain powdered tobacco. Smoking tobacco was illegal during the Qing Dynasty, but the use of snuff was allowed because the Chinese considered snuff to be a remedy for common illnesses such as colds, headaches and stomach disorders. Therefore, snuff was carried in a small bottle like other medicines. The snuff bottle replaced the snuff box used by Europeans.
